Three Forney High School track and field athletes are in their final week of preparations for the 2009 edition of the UIL State Track and Field meet to be held Friday at the Mike A. Myers Track & Field Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.
Senior Chandrell Stephens and juniors Ezra Roberson and Joshua Taylor qualified for the state meet by finishing in either first or second place in their events at the Region II-4A meet held last month at Fouts Field on the campus of the University of North Texas at Denton.
Stephens qualified in two events taking first place in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.58. In the 200 meter dash, she took second with a time of 24.19. Stephens is no stranger to the Myers track as she won the 100 meter dash earlier this spring at the Texas Relays. She finished third in last year’s state meet in both the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash.
The 100 meter dash is scheduled to be run Friday night at 7:05. Stephens will have just over an hour to recover and get ready for the 200 meter dash which is scheduled for 8:25.
Roberson will be making his first appearance at the state meet. He finished second at the regional meet in the shot put with a throw of 55’10 ¾”. The shot put is scheduled to begin at 6:00 Friday evening.
Taylor will also be making his first appearance in Austin after taking first place in the 3200 meter run at the regional meet. Taylor won by on four 1/100th of a second with a personal best time of 9:41.25. The second place time by Kyle Garcia of Frisco Centennial was 9:41.29. Taylor will get to run in what should be cooler temperatures as the 3200 meter run is scheduled for 9:00 Friday morning. Back in the fall, Taylor qualified for the state cross country meet in Round Rock.
