Earth Day, April 22nd, proved to be both an educational and exciting event at Crosby Elementary. Not only did students learn about recycling and taking care of the Earth, they were able to practice what they had learned first hand.
The day began with an Earth Day awareness parade presented by the Kindergarten and Life Skills classes. Students adorned themselves in Earth Day décor and marched throughout the school hallways.
Later that morning, the entire student body assisted with planting 52 shrubs which had been donated by the Crosby K-Kids organization.
Students helped by digging holes, pouring soil, and watering. K-Kids sponsor, Tracie Pritchett, stated that the organization “wanted to make Crosby Elementary as beautiful outside as it is inside.”
Mrs. Pritchett further commented, “We are so proud of the job we did and hope that our community takes pride in the hard work accomplished by the students.”
During the afternoon, 6th graders worked with Lisa Nalls and Carrie Sharp of the Kaufman County Extension Agency to plant flowers and a Bradford Pear tree.
The school festivities concluded with the announcement that the intermediate grades (3-6) had won the school-wide paper recycling contest by collecting the most paper products for recycling during the week.
Crosby Cougars would like to thank Dennis Adams for donating his time, hard labor and the soil mixture used for the shrubs along with Lisa Nalls and Carrie Sharp of the Kaufman County Extension Agency for providing the flowers, pear tree, and other supplies.
The school also appreciates Marlyn Roberts’ assistance with the project and Lowes for providing a discount on the shrubs.
