County Updates Rabies Vaccination Ordinances
Submitted by Kaufman County Sheriff's Office
June 24, 2009
On Monday June 22, 2009, at the regular Commissioners Court meeting an amended Ordinance providing for Rabies Control and County Animal Control was presented by Sheriff Byrnes.
Byrnes explained that the proposed amendments were to bring the County Ordinance in line with state law pertaining to the time interval for rabies booster shots. The original ordinance specified annual booster shots for rabies vaccinations. Depending on the manufacturer of the vaccine, rabies booster shots may now last up to three years.
The only other change requires the owner of an animal that bites someone to produce proof of rabies immunizations within 72 hours of the bite.
Byrnes further stated that we are coming into the time of year when most rabies cases seem to occur.
Byrnes, also cautioned citizens to be alert for any nocturnal animal, such as a skunk or a raccoon, during day times hours. Any such animal should be avoided as they are in all likelihood sick.
