Over 150 homeschool basketball teams converged in Frisco, TX on February 21-23 for the annual Texas Homeschool State Basketball Championships, a massive tournament involving dozens of home school basketball programs around the state. One program, with Forney ties, which saw huge success in this year’s tournament is the Dallas Thunder organization, with three of their ten teams winning state championship trophies.
Thunder’s 16U boys team (29-4 on the season) defeated Dallas HSAA 40-31 in the state semifinal and then completed their run with a 55-42 win over the San Marcos Panthers to take the state title at their age level. One of Thunder’s three all-tournament selections was Blake Rasbury, a 6-foot sophomore guard from Forney who scored 11 in the final game and played well throughout the weekend.
Thunder’s 14U girls team (24-5) had their own championship run including a semifinal 46-32 win over the Houston-area SATCH Mavericks followed by a dramatic 45-40 championship victory over powerhouse Dallas HSAA. Three Thunder players from Forney made the all-tournament team: Kaylee Rasbury (5’6” point guard who earned a triple-double in the semifinal game and scored 24 points in the final), Sarah McAfee, and Lexi Lesiuk. Also starting for Thunder are Forney’s Taylor Childress and Terrell’s Ashlyn Lowrie (each of whom played at a championship level all weekend).
Thunder’s 10U girls team (newly formed this season) won their own 1st place trophy, going undefeated in the tournament. This team includes Forney’s Jenna Rasbury and Bethany McAfee as well as Terrell’s Abbi Lowrie.
These teams (and Thunder’s entire organization) will be headed to Springfield, Missouri for the National Christian Homeschool Basketball Championships to be held March 18-23. This tournament includes hundreds of teams from all over the country and features some of the top basketball talent anywhere. More information can be found at www.homeschoolbasketball.com.
Dallas Thunder is composed of homeschooling families from all over the DFW area and includes boys and girls teams who compete at every available age level (10u, 12u, 14u, 16u, and Varsity). Some in-season practices are held at the Forney Sports Center, making it a good fit for Forney area home school families.
Thunder’s athletic director and high school boys coach is Doyle Moncrief. More information about Dallas Thunder basketball can be found at their website (www.dallasthunder.org). The organization will be offering a spring and summer skills program for all student athletes (not just homeschoolers) at all age levels starting in early April, including sessions at the Forney Sports Center. More information will be posted to the Thunder website as details become available.
