The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office presented the Elmo Citizens on Patrol program with a patrol car Thursday night in Elmo. The car was presented at the monthly meeting of the Elmo community Crime Watch. The car will be used by the COP members to patrol the Elmo area to assist the sheriff’s office in watching for, and quickly reporting, crimes in progress and suspicious activity in the area.
The Elmo crime watch program was formed in 2011 and has over 50 members.
Each member of the COP program is required to attend a thirteen week Citizen Police Academy training course. Each member also has to attend an eight hour citizens on patrol course outlining the limitations and the responsibilities of the volunteers.
Citizens on Patrol groups act as additional sets of eyes and ears for law enforcement in Kaufman County. Kaufman County has five active Citizens on Patrol groups, with additional units in Prairieville, Lively, the Travis Ranch development, Heartland development, and Windmill Farms development.
Sheriff Byrnes stated “I am proud of the hard work these volunteers do to help make their communities safe and we are happy to be able to do this.”
The National Association for Citizens on Patrol was founded in 1999. Each individual association is composed of volunteers from their respective communities. They patrol their community watching for suspicious activity, aiding stranded motorists, and most importantly, increasing the level of comfort for those who see the extra units on the street. They conduct routine checks of businesses and vacation checks for homeowners who are away.
