At this months’ school board meeting, FISD Assistant Superintendent of Operations, Dr. Brian Zemlicka explained to the Board of Trustees the need for the District to increase the cost of school lunches in the upcoming school year.

Dr. Zemlicka stated “in order to be in compliance with the guidelines of the Child Nutrition Program, I am recommending a ten cent increase in student meals for 2012-2013 school year. The new price for an elementary paid student meal will be $2.15 and a secondary paid student meal will be $2.45.”

Explaining Dr. Zemlicka said, “According to the guidelines of the Child Nutrition Program, the average weighted price of a student meal must be equal to or above $2.51. This is the difference between the Free and Paid reimbursement rate for 2012-2013. Our average weighted price for a student meal is $2.11.”

“Our weighted price is $.40 below the required price. However, there is a cap of $.10 per meal price increase each year, so we are not required to increase our lunches by $.40 this year. I recommend we increase it by ten cents and then again in future school years” said Dr. Zemlicka.

Without too much discussion, Board Trustee Greg Pharris made motion to pass the action item and was immediately seconded by Trustee, David Walker after which all members of the Board voted their agreement.
