Forney ISD Hosts Swimming Awards Banquet

On Friday night the swimmers of the Forney and North Forney High Swim Teams were honored at a banquet held at the Forney ISD Administration Building, and several swimmers were recognized for their outstanding swim records this school year.

The best example Forney ISD has ever produced of cooperation and support, the swimmers of the Forney and North Forney High swim teams have always practiced and swam together.

They have traveled together and repeatedly supported each other, as have the families that support these students, in swim meets against high schools with much larger swim programs, and have never been more than mildly competitive with one another.

It was apparent that lasting friendships have resulted from the structure of the FISD swim program and this fact was easily apparent as these 23 swimmers sat together as FISD Swim Coach, Brandon Tunnell, briefly discussed each of their swimming achievements.

While eating a lovely dinner of barbeque brisket and chicken a highlights video of the 2011 FISD Swim Season was played after which, Coach Tunnell, presented a slide presentation that highlighted each individual swimmer.

As each swimmer was announced, Coach Tunnell, first briefly told the story of how the swimmer had received their nickname. He then announced their swimming records and achievements before asking them to step forward and join the audience in watching a brief video clip of one of their teammates describing them.

In preparation for the awards banquet, each swimmer had been video taped by Coach Tunnell describing their favorite memory of a fellow swimmer. Some of the video clips were extremely funny and each of the swimmers took the “mild roasting” by Coach Tunnell good naturedly.

Coach Tunnell next presented the Captains Awards to Forney High Senior, Savannah Davis and to North Forney High Juniors, Katie Fry and Tyler Clevenger.

The Most Improved Swimmer Awards were next presented to FHS freshman, Colt Smith, who improved by 52 seconds over the season, and NFH Junior, Zac Coe, who improved his time by 31 seconds over the season.

The Most Inspirational Swimmer Awards were presented next and Coach Tunnell stated, “This is the award I wanted to get when I was young and swimming because I knew it was voted on by my teammates and that meant they thought I was a good teammate to have.”

FHS Junior, Tara White and NFH Junior, Tyler Clevenger, were selected by their teammates as the FHS and NFH, Most Inspirational Swimmers of 2011-2012.

The Most Valuable Swimmer Awards were next presented, and Forney High Senior, and the only FISD Swimmer to ever make State Regional Finals, Savannah Davis was awarded the Forney High School Most Valuable Swimmer Award. While Sophomore, Harrison Wick, was presented the NFH School Most Valuable Swimmer Award.

Coach Tunnell next recognized the FISD swim programs first graduating senior, Savannah Davis, who he presented with a gift as he listed the many swimming records and team contributions Davis has made while swimming for FHS for the past four years.

Swimming as a Jackrabbit from the first moment the FISD sanctioned a swim team, Savannah Davis, is a solid swimmer that gave form and backbone to the FISD swim program, and one who has blazed a path for future FISD swimmers.

Coach Tunnell stated, “We had another great year of swimming for the Forney ISD. We continue to grow and I’m proud of how we represent our great sport. I want to congratulate everyone on their successful year and I’m looking forward to even greater accomplishments next year.”
